Ministry as a Strange Tool: Inhabiting a World in Which God “Shows Up”
Leader: Erik Leafblad
ELECTIVE A:Tuesday 4/24; 4:15–5:45 PM
ELECTIVE B: Wednesday 4/25; 1:30- 3:00 PM
Philosopher Alva Noe describes art as a “strange tool” whose aim is not to manufacture or objectify the world, but to reveal and uncover. Art helps the world show up. Art participates in the meaningfulness of the world. In youth ministry we develop practices and experiences in which God might “show up.” We pray for something meaningful. What if ministry and art work similarly? What if ministry is a “strange tool” of God’s presence in the world? In this elective we will explore the theological implications of this idea, and then spend time thinking through ministerial practices to embody these ideas with young people.
